Da Hong Pao Oolong Tea – Organic Loose Leaf Big Red Robe

Da Hong Pao Oolong—also known as Big Red Robe Tea—is one of the most legendary and sought-after loose leaf oolong teas in the world.

It grows on the rocky cliffs of China’s Wuyi Mountains, where tradition, prestige, and natural depth shape every leaf.

According to legend, this tea once healed the mother of a Ming Dynasty emperor. In gratitude, he cloaked the tea bushes in ceremonial red robes—giving rise to the name “Big Red Robe.”

Skilled workers pluck the ancient tea plants, then wither the leaves, bruise them in bamboo baskets, and finally roll and roast them slowly over charcoal.

As a result, the cup reveals a smooth, full-bodied flavour with nutty depth, a gentle hint of Muscatel, and a refined smoky finish.

Taste Profile

This Big Red Robe Tea offers a rich, copper-hued infusion layered with toasted nuts, musky stone fruit, and delicate smoke.

Smooth and full-bodied, its long-lasting finish becomes more expressive with each infusion.

If you enjoy Da Hong Pao, you may also like Ti Kuan Yin, Formosa Oolong, or Tung Ting Oolong.

Origin

This tea grows in the UNESCO-listed Wuyi Mountains of Fujian province, where mineral-rich soils and misty cliffs create ideal growing conditions.

The centuries-old tea plants used for Da Hong Pao yield only a small quantity of leaf each season, adding to its rarity.

Traditionally, the first infusion is offered to the Buddha, while the second and third reveal a rounded body, toasted notes, and a clean, lasting finish.

In keeping with ancient practices, farmers nourish the land with natural compost and harvest every leaf by hand. These sustainable methods protect the surrounding ecosystem and maintain the health of the legendary tea bushes.

By avoiding chemical additives during charcoal roasting and final drying, the finished tea reflects the true purity of its origin.

As a result, Da Hong Pao remains not only one of China’s most iconic teas, but also one of its most naturally cultivated.

Brewing Guide

Here’s how to brew the perfect cup of Da Hong Pao Oolong Tea:

  • Tea Quantity: 1 heaped tsp (approx. 3g) per 200ml water
  • Water Temperature: 90–95°C
  • Steeping Time: 2–3 minutes
  • Serving Suggestions: Enjoy plain to appreciate the roasted complexity—best without milk

Re-steep 2–4 times, increasing steep time slightly with each infusion to unlock its evolving flavours.

Benefits
