Da Hong Pao Oolong, also known as Big Red Robe Oolong, is one of the most prestigious oolong teas in China. According to legend, this oolong cured the emperor’s mother during the Ming Dynasty and in gratitude he sent red robes to protect the tea bushes. Da Hong Pao itself is produced from 400 year old tea bushes on the slopes of the Wuyi Mountains. After the leaves are plucked, they are withered and placed on bamboo baskets and shaken. Shaking the tea leaves helps to gently bruise the tea leaves which further promotes oxidation. The tea leaves are then rolled and dried over a charcoal fire which is responsible for its slight smoky profile.
Traditionally, the first infusion is not drunk but given to Buddha as a ritual offering. The second infusion develops a wonderful combination of nutty flavours, accompanied by Muscatel notes and a soft, smooth roasted taste The infusion presents a copper coloured cup which has a long-lasting flavour with depth and a full body that must be experienced.
